The University of Memphis’ Paralegal Studies Program is approved by the American Bar Association.
In the Paralegal Studies Program, students acquire professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform substantive legal work under the direction and supervision of an attorney. Only licensed attorneys are permitted to practice law; however, qualified paralegals and legal assistants working under attorney supervision can contribute significantly to the efficient delivery of legal services in an expanding variety of private law office, corporate, and government agency settings.
The program offers a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree. The paralegal professional core courses within this degree program emphasize theoretical and practical applications of legal and ethical principles; collection, organization, and critical analysis of legal materials; effective communications and computer skills; initiative, flexibility, and cooperation in the workplace; and, preparation to meet the challenges of the profession while avoiding the unauthorized practice of law by laypersons.
"Paralegals and legal assistants are prohibited from practicing law.
The practice of law generally includes the following activities:
- Setting fees for legal work.
- Giving legal advice.
- Preparing or signing legal documents.
- Representing another before a court or other tribunal."
