Master of Arts in Liberal Studies

The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Strategic Leadreship is offered by the University of Memphis at the campus of Jackson State Community College in Jackson, TN.

Strategic Leadership is designed for adults working in or moving into leadership positions in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Students in this program come from a variety of career areas, including manufacturing, health care, education, banking, law enforcement, and other areas of management.

The courses in this program were all selected to examine leadership and management topics from a variety of academic perspectives. The Strategic Leadership Program consists of 33 hours of interdisciplinary coursework in the following areas:

  • Communication
  • Project planning and implementation
  • Organizational Leadership.
  • Globalization
  • Research
  • Teamwork and productivity
  • International expertise
  • Public relations knowledge

The program is designed primarily for busy adults with a broad range of experience in the everyday world; they bring an awareness of the limits of their previous collegiate experience, an intellectual curiosity, and a host of unanswered questions. These students should be willing to explore multiple perspectives and to undertake the sometimes difficult but exhilarating task of integrating and relating various disciplinary approaches. They should be able to read critically and write effectively, skills that will only improve throughout their MALS experience.

Strategic Leadership courses are scheduled in an accelerated format that allows mature adults to complete the program with minimal intrusion into their busy lives. While this program could be completed in as few as 15 months by attending classes one night per week and one weekend per month, the courses are scheduled in a non-cohort format and students can take up to six years to complete the program. Accelerated courses are scheduled in seven-week sessions or in a four-weekend format to allow flexibility and convenience.

The Strategic Leadership degree was recently awarded a regional award from the Association for Continuing Higher Education for an innovative credit degree program.
