FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
ACADEMIC ADVISING
Academic advising is a critical component
of the undergraduate experience. It is the process of developing a
meaningful educational plan that is compatible with the student's
abilities, values, interests and career goals. In achieving an academic
degree, both the student and the advisor must share in the
responsibilities. It is University of Memphis policy that every student be advised before each
registration period. The only exception to this policy would be if a
student is cleared to register for more than one semester by their
advisor. You can check your clearance status in Spectrum at
https://spectrum.memphis.edu/.
Advisor’s Responsibilities:
Help students
clarify their values, interests and goals as related to their
academic program.
Provide accurate information about educational options, requirements, policies and
procedures.
Refer students to other university resources, as needed.
Assist students with a course plan to satisfy university and college requirements for graduation.
Students’s Responsibilities:
Know the requirements of your chosen academic program, including all deadlines.
Monitor your academic progress by keeping a record of courses that you complete.
Read and keep all materials provided by your advisor.
Complete all required assignments and paperwork by the designated deadlines.
Make a photocopy of all documents and retain them for your personal records before submitting
them to the college.
Activate your "memphis.edu" email address. For assistance, contact 901-678-8888 or visit
http://iam.memphis.edu. This is the official means to communicate with your advisor.

How to Prepare for Your Advising Appointment:
Review your advising guideline or baccalaureate contract. Check off each course that you have completed.
Review the “Course Sections” in Spectrum and make a list of courses you plan to take for the
upcoming semester.
Make a list of questions.
Check the course plan provided by your advisor and make sure you have completed all items, as
instructed.
Schedule your appointment well in advance, usually 6 weeks before the start of each registration
period. You should call starting in mid-September for Spring and mid-February for Summer and
Fall semesters. Scheduling your appointment well in advance will allow you to get the courses
you need. Call 901-678-2716 for appointments.
